About Me

Hi. I’m Charlena.

I love my family. All of it. Mama Bear is just the tip of the iceberg.  We may not always agree: but my families perspective and wisdom creates the kaleidoscope lens through which I’ve been blessed to see the world.

I love words. I love words, because they matter.  They matter so much more than we realize. Words change lives. Words move us to action. Words sustain us through the unimaginable. Words have the power to take us to another world when we need the perspective, and words can bring us home when we need a safe space to return to. Whatever your soul needs, words can deliver: laughter, solidarity, encouragement, excitement, courage, silliness, strength. Words are powerful. Make them count.

I love people. The messier, the scrappier, the scruffier, the further away from perfect… the better. I understand this world through it’s people. Their gifts, and strengths, their love and compassion, their character and courage. I sincerely believe that people are fundamentally good. I desperately crave a world where people are heard, safe, loved and empowered.

I love home. Although we travel a lot: I’m raising the 7th generation on the same piece of property. Multi-generational living runs through my veins. I don’t know any other way to do life. I love good people sitting around my dining room table, eating good food and having deep, meaningful conversations. I hope my children think back on this place and remember a childhood in which they were deeply loved, seen, and treasured (as I do). I live for lazy evenings on my back porch with a glass of wine and close friends.

I love Jesus. Everything about the guy moves me: the way He loved outcasts and shunned power, the subversive way He challenged religion, His genius teachings that managed to stay perfectly relevant for more than 2000 years, the cross. All of it. I’m pretty sure that if you’re not down with Jesus, you probably just don’t know Him. Because Jesus is pretty legit – no matter who you are.

I love my community. You’re always at the forefront of my mind. I care about you, and what you care about. Your success, your heart, your soul, your joy, your happiness… all of it. It matters so much to me. Protecting our space is non-negotiable: you are always, ALWAYS safe with me. I promise to cradle you gently. You can ask hard questions, and I promise to as well. Let’s challenge one another and work hard, together, to champion Love above all else.

My Story

I’ve lived quite a few lives. Here’s a quick summary.

A twisty, windy road brought me to you. Here’s the shortest version I can muster:

I grew up on a micro-farm in a poor community, but I didn’t know we were poor and that makes all the difference.  I still live on the same property, minus the active farm part… so. much. work, you guys.

I was the first person in my family to go away to College. This was a huge deal. I went on to earn multiple bachelors and masters degrees from multiple Universities, one at which I ultimately took on the role of Professor for nearly 15 years.

During College I was an international event planner. In the same month I planned Beyonce’s 21st Birthday Party and The Dalai Llama’s private seminar on Death and Dying. Talk about a spectrum.

I ‘retired’ from International Event planning (traveling 300 days a year) to step into the world of marketing, ultimately taking on the role of COO at one of the top agencies on the East Coast.

I got very, very sick when I was pregnant. Two babies later I was still very sick with no diagnosis. Several months in the ICU with a 0% chance of survival on complete life support and I still refused to die. My heart just kept beating. And so, slowly, over 2-3 years of physical therapy with two small babies in tow: I learned to eat, stand, speak, walk and even run and ride again. The experience afforded me the greatest gift in life: a completely clean slate. When I put my life back together, piece by piece, I was determined to serve women like you. Women like me. Women that, together, can change the world.

And here we are.
